Why self-awareness equates to the knowledge of the limitless potential of the 'self'?
Learning about yourself in terms of attributes to pin to your character is not learning about yourself but piling limitations to who you are supposed to be that romantically fits right in your head. In fact, it promotes the theme of self-image and not the 'self'.
Self-image is the picture of who you deliberately project yourself to be. A projection for others and to satisfy your ego 'self'. This is unenlightened because it does not seek truth but is ok with a fake self, which means the foundation to everything is pretentious and void thus growth cannot be justifiably formed. Besides the theme of spiritual awakening, rationally, this self-image is also not a means to an end because it is a wall put up to mask the question of self-identity with an answer that your subconscious innately know is false. Of course this leads to all the flaws of the ego - insecurity, anger, jealousy etc. All walls have to be broken free from to attain growth and self-awareness. You can't understand yourself when you have purposely build a blockage to gaining full possession of who you are. Only you will know the truth.
When you have broken down all walls and find no more need to qualify and quantify yourself with traits, knowing that they only demean who you really are, that is when you will soon receive the true dawning of self-awareness. Then you will understand what I mean about the boundlessness of self. You will require no characteristic being attached to who you are to understand who you are. You will require no material attachments to justify the self that you are. And you will be simply that which you have hidden away, a pure, beautiful energy, inspired at every moment to grow, grow and grow.
Pure is a state where you approach everything with the basis stripped from ingrained thoughts and instincts coming from usually a societal drumming. Sometimes we feel that just because so many people believe a certain thing, it is surely right. And yes, we cannot immediately say it is 'wrong' either, but to academically address any theory, we have to strip ourselves of what we have been conditioned to think and become by society.
Like for examples: the roles of men and women, the meaning of sex, the quest of life, the subject of money, the stages of life (birth to teenager to adulthood to marriage to kids to elderly to death), the need for religion. These are all big topics and have been addressed but there are even subtler topics of action and thought so deeply embedded into us that we cannot recognise it except for thinking that it is only 'natural' and 'normal' to think this way. Certain factors of society have succeeded in controlling the rest of us so well and their rule whether conscious or unconscious on the side of the enslaved has been accepted for so long that to question it will be to bring down an entire house that have been built on the foundations of folly and manipulation.
Then there are also those on the other side of the pendulum who are away from societal norms but still not truly 'pure' because they are only intent on the counter-culture with the premise of rebellion. Not truly understanding why but thinking its fashionable to be disdainful of the mainstream. Knowing what will constitute an alternative, edgy or the "acquired taste" semblance of any form of movies, books or art that could add to their collection of trophies showcasing them to be some deep thinker or worldly intellect to others is not the sincere route to personal satisfaction. It is not too difficult to pick out what is overly popular and find the flaws within it. But it IS embarrassingly silly to swiftly shift over to a complete anti position regarding a subject you were keenly into just awhile ago just because every tom, dick and harry is into it as well now, just because you have no wish to associate yourself with the average person. This is still primarily self-image enforced. Not really a movement towards self understanding but instead greater self-indulgence.
To be pure therefore means to be beyond all these petty issues of the ego 'self' or self-image bondages. And pure is where your real self is. The realisation of the self has to be untainted by the dynamics of all these distractions. It is intensely personal and profoundly at one with the rest of creation. Because when you study the self without adornments of any sort, using strictly the mind and heart of the most disciplined scholar, you realise that it is intensely more universal and yet individualistic than you imagined it could be. It has an amazing infinite energy in that pure state. A baby seems so precious not just because it is vulnerable, but because it has an entire lifetime ahead of him with entire possibilities to its creation. That is the self we have forgotten in the piling of adornments when the shock of knowing that none of them equates to who you are comes and then the scream in desperate wish to know becomes so loud that it echoes throughout the wasted ages. We are the nameless, abundant energy that cannot be destroyed. Energy can never be destroyed...
Get rid of the need to identify yourself with particular tangibles. Be brave. And the wave of self-awareness will wash over you like the calming freshness of the morning's rain embraced in the larger magnitude, enlightened in discarding the one-sided triviality of drenching gloom. You are above labels and objects depicting an image of you. You can be anything, anything at all. And that is YOU.
